Last year, the Lenten season coincided with the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic and the rapid closing down and closing in of “life” as we expected it to be.  Most of us never expected to be in the same place a year later; nor did we expect the other difficulties of the last 12 tumultuous months including racial injustice, political discord, and a year of online church. We may be less anxious about the “unknown”—because the unexpected has become the new normal—but we also may be more weary, discouraged and disinclined to hope.

As we enter the Lenten season this year, we invite you to turn with us to the most familiar and loved Psalm of all time—The 23rd Psalm. The imagery of Christ as our Shepherd speaks directly to our current times and what it looks like to depend on God in the midst of turmoil.  The Psalmist offers to each of us the reasonable hope that, because “the Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want”: to rediscover what it’s like to trust our Shepherd to lead us by still waters, to rest in green pastures, to prepare a table before us in the midst of all sorts of enemies, or to guide us even when shadows of death and despair loom over us. To restore our souls!

The retreat will be in person and outdoors. We will wear masks and stay socially distanced. And we will do it all SoulCARE style, with space for time alone with God, input from the team, and meaningful fellowship. Breakfast snacks will be available upon arrival, lunch will be provided, and we will end the day with appetizers and some of our favorite beverages.

CrossWinds Church was built on the site of a 38-acre dairy farm. It’s got lots of beautiful outdoor spaces for meetings, and for walking and sitting while we are on retreat. SoulCARE has been meeting here monthly during this COVID impacted year.
