Our lives have many waiting places. Some are relatively benign: waiting in lines, at red lights, for an anticipated movie release. Some are quite acute: the childless couple waiting for a child, the chronically ill for health or death, the waiting of the emotionally scarred for peace, the waiting of men and women in dead-end careers for a breakthrough, those in unhappy marriages for relief or redemption or escape, for children to get through a difficult stage, or the waiting of the lonely to belong.
In the pain of waiting we can lose hope that God will show up in the realities of our lives. We join the Psalmist in crying out…
In silence our souls wait, for you, and you alone, Oh God.
From you alone comes our salvation.” Psalm 62:1
But what if these Waiting Times are actually worthwhile in their own right? In his book Waiting, Ben Patterson asserts: “At least as important as the things we wait for is the work God wants to do in us as we wait”. This downloadable retreat will offer ways to meet God in the midst of our waiting places this Advent season.
